The laser generating technology that is used to produce sheet laser cutting machines can be upgraded to deliver as much as 12 kW. A laser tube cutter typically produces 5 kW of power, because more power would simultaneously cut through both ends of the tube.

Fabricators might first think of high-speed laser cutting when they think about fiber laser cutting technology. While this might be true in some cases, it is not the case when it comes tube cutting. It is more about the time required to process a tube so it meets specifications than the actual cutting speed.

Fiber lasers are 10 percent shorter than CO2 laser beams in wavelength. Because of its shorter wavelength, fiber lasers produce a beam that is easier to absorb by reflective materials. A CO2 laser's wavelength is less likely to reflect off these surfaces. This allows fiber laser cutting machines to cut brass, bronze, and other reflective material. A CO2 laser beam that reflects on the material can damage not only its cutting lens, but the entire beam path. This risk can be eliminated by using fiber-optic cables to guide the beam.

Tube extensions are available for loading tube stock to the maximum length of 80", or 6'8". The maximum part size is 52".

The fiber laser's small modules, which are compact and easily transportable, allow for redundancy. The resonator won't completely shut down if one module experiences a problem. In order to provide power for the down module, the fiber laser can temporarily produce more power until it is repaired. This can, of course, be done in the field. Sometimes, the fiber resonator will continue to produce reduced power until repairs are made. If a CO2 reactor has an issue, it can cause the whole resonator to go down.
